Donor support helps power surgical excellence at Langley Memorial Hospital
Langley Memorial Hospital is one of just 10 hospitals in Canada and 76 worldwide to be recognized for surgical excellence by the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP).
The program evaluates how well hospitals reduce complications and improve patient outcomes, drawing on data from 609 institutions globally. Participating sites track surgical results over time, which are analyzed and shared to support safer, higher-quality care.
Langley earned top honours in high-risk categories including mortality, cardiac events, pneumonia, infections and renal failure.
The designation reflects the hospital’s success in improving outcomes for adult surgical patients, says Dr. Mitra Maharaj, site medical director at Langley Memorial Hospital. He notes that donor support helps fund urgently needed tools and equipment that help surgical teams to work more efficiently.
“Donor support plays a vital role in helping us invest in the equipment and technology we need to improve outcomes, reduce complications and provide safer care for every patient,” says Dr. Maharaj.
Over 2024 to 2025, about 2,552 patients were admitted for surgical procedures at Langley Memorial. In that same time period, 11,237 people had day surgeries, in which they returned home the same day.
In recent years Langley donors have given to support the purchase of surgical equipment such as imaging scopes, cardiac monitoring equipment, operating tables and vital signs monitors.
“This recognition reflects the dedication of our surgical teams and the impact of having the right tools in place,” says Dr. Maharaj. “Donor support plays a vital role in helping us invest in the equipment and technology we need to improve outcomes, reduce complications and provide safer care for every patient.”
