Meet Dr. Rita Wittmann, Respirologist
Dr. Wittmann specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the airway and lung system. Every day she sees patients who are trying to understand why walking up a single flight of stairs has become exhausting.
Before she can treat them, however, she needs to understand what’s happening inside their lungs.
What is a Body Booth?
A plethysmography unit, or “body booth,” is a piece of equipment that allows for specialized lung function testing. It helps respirologists assess how well a patient’s lungs are working and how effectively oxygen moves into the bloodstream.
Between 25-35 patients are seen at Langley Memorial’s respiratory clinic each week, and wait times are up to two years.
With a second booth, staff can see double the number of patients and drastically reduce long wait times.
“We have the team, expertise and space,” says Karen Steeves, a Respiratory Therapist at Langley Memorial. “What we don’t have is enough equipment to meet the need.”
