Not sure where to start when it comes to estate planning? A free workshop in Aldergrove could provide information and practical advice on planning for an uncertain future.
Langley Hospice Society and Langley Community Health & Hospital Foundation are hosting the Saturday, Oct. 24, event at Langley Meals on Wheels in Aldergrove. The workshop will take place at the second floor of the 2900 272 St. location.
From 9:30 to 11 a.m., Angela Elemans, palliative programs manager at the hospice society, will be presenting on advance-care planning, including planning, decision-making, documentation, and available resources.
“I hope people will walk away understanding the importance of having conversations with their family about their end of life,” Elemans said.
“We spend so much time planning our lives; weddings, babies, home purchases, yet we spend almost no time or energy planning for our death - and it can impact our loved ones for years.”
Elemans recognized that these conversations can be difficult, but said they can become easier with practice.
“I think it’s beneficial for anyone to attend because we are all going to support someone or need support from someone at some point in our lives,” she said. “My recommendation is to bring a loved one so you can learn together.”
Following Elemans’ presentation, there will be a presentation on MedWatch/Greensleeves, the medical information and advance-care-planning system used in B.C., from the Langley Division of Family Practice from 11:10 a.m. to noon.
Attendees can also look forward to lunch, which will be provided from noon to 12:20 p.m.
After lunch, senior wealth advisor Tanya Lyn Werk will discuss financial decision-making and powers of attorney from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
The workshop is intended to be interactive and will end with a panel discussion and Q&A featuring a tax accountant, lawyer, financial planner, and advance-care planning specialist.
Planning ahead can also help families avoid difficult decisions or conflict during an emotional time.
“I want people to know that planning for their future is a gift to your loved ones,” said Elemans. “Nobody wants to make decisions on your behalf and then have to second guess or wonder if they have done the right thing.”
People can register for the workshop by calling 604 530 1115 or emailing angela@langleyhospice.ca
