Give your thanks to Langley’s hospital heroes this season

As a surgeon at Langley Memorial Hospital, Dr. Sarah Lord sees every day how vulnerable people feel when they’re facing an operation.

Regardless of what brings them to the operating room, whether a planned procedure or an emergency, they’re entrusting the hospital teams with their lives.

“Each year, my colleagues and I perform nearly 6,000 operations - some are quick and straightforward, while others are complex and life-changing, like joint replacements, emergency C-sections or cancer surgeries,” Dr. Lord reflects.

With a growing population, including many young families and seniors, the number of surgeries will only increase, yet surgical teams are often relying on medical tools that are out of date. “They work, but they can’t always give patients the comfort, precision or speed of recovery that we all expect from modern medicine,” Dr. Lord explains.

It’s with that in mind that the Langley Community Health & Hospital Foundation has put essential operating room equipment at the top of its holiday wishlist. Your support for local medical teams will ensure they have the specialized equipment needed to improve surgical outcomes and make procedures safer for every patient.

Included on this year’s list are:

  • Fluoroscopy shields - Protective barriers that reduce radiation exposure during imaging procedures.

  • Operating room tables - Adjustable tables that support patients during surgery.

  • Stretchers - Mobile beds used to safely transport patients within the hospital.

“When I think of why donor support is so effective, my mind turns to the ‘Magseed,’ a tiny magnetic marker radiologists embed in a patient’s breast to track the precise spot where the questionable tissue needs to be removed through surgery,” Dr. Lord notes.

“This technique replaces the outdated practice of using a small wire to mark the vulnerable spot, which is an uncomfortable procedure - my patients deserve better and thanks to recent donor donations, Langley Memorial Hospital will soon be using the Magseed! It makes their care safer, easier and more compassionate.”

This kind of innovation reflects what the community’s support accomplishes right here at home at Langley Memorial Hospital. And every dollar donated stays in Langley, strengthening care for families now and for generations to come.

“I know from experience that when the right tools are available at the right time, lives can be saved. That’s why your support matters so much.”

This holiday season, make a donation online at LCHHFoundation.com/caregivers to honour and thank the caregivers at Langley Memorial Hospital. You can even leave a note of thanks or a few words of encouragement to Langley Memorial Hospital staff - messages will be added to a printed card and displayed in the hospital for staff to read. Alternatively, you can call 672 879 2332 to ensure your gift is received.
