A Call to Community

For Dougal and Lori Shewan, generosity is about strengthening the cornerstones of life in the community they’ve called home for generations.

Since 2009, the principals behind the Shewan Family Foundation have directed their energy and resources to improve education, community health and programs for youth and the social good across Langley.

Now, in a partnership with Langley Community Health & Hospital Foundation, the Shewan Foundation is directing its energy to a matching campaign - meeting every donation, dollar for dollar, up to $200,000, to support youth mental health services at Foundry Langley.

“We made our donation with the hope it would encourage others to give too,” says Dougal Shewan, a co-principal of the Foundation. “If our gift can generate more giving, then that’s a really good thing.”

The Shewan Foundation has touched nearly every corner of Langley. By giving through scholarships for high school students, to food programs, funding autism assessments and supporting seniors and single mothers, animal protection and church initiatives, their giving reflects the family’s belief in supporting the foundations of a caring society.

“We try to keep it local if we can, but not necessarily - our focus is always on where we can make a difference,” he adds.

The commitment is personal. Dougal still remembers the scholarships that allowed him to attend university in the 1970s. “Scholarships [were a signal] to me: ‘You have potential. Go for it.’ That’s always stayed with me, and I have never forgotten that generosity and support from the community.”

Philanthropy is a tradition, too. Dougal’s own father Bob chaired the Langley Memorial Hospital board in the 1960s. Dougal and Lori hope to pass the torch to their children and grandchildren, who are already showing a keen interest, he says.

The matching fund is their way of rallying others to strengthen Foundry Langley’s critical work.

Between April and June of 2025, Foundry Langley welcomed 1,521 visits from young people while 189 new youth registered with the organization in that same time period.

“Youth are our future,” says Dougal. “If they’re struggling with their mental health, how do they manage the rest of their lives? We need to take care of them now, while they still have so much potential ahead of them.”

All donations made towards the Foundry Langley Fund before March 31, 2026, or pledged by that date (up to a maximum 5-year pledge period), will be matched dollar for dollar by the Shewan Family Foundation.

For example: $200 per year x 5 years will translate into $2,000 of impact!
